Pattern Day

The fifteenth of August was a traditional day to go to Ballybunion for North Kerry people to go for a dip in the tide and get ready for the harvest but as the old woman said “every day is a pattern day now!”It is the feast day of the Assumption of Our Lady.

“Our life, our sweetness, our hope “

                  Old Voices

Why do I go back I ask myself

To an old woman I visited

Over thirty years ago

Living alone.

Singular she is in her visible poverty

Her independence masking an enduring spirit

That is accepting and real

Silent and knowing

Her piercing eyes saw into

And maybe beyond the abyss of emptiness.

She had what I need now.
